Getting to Adora’s required a lengthy bus ride, one that saw him five minutes late as he walked up to her apartment building. The place wasn’t as sketchy as he’d feared. It was quite charming actually. There were plenty of lights on the outside, and the white façade seemed in good shape. He found himself questioning how she could afford to live there, but he shoved the thought aside and hurried to the third floor.

Number nine was before him, so he sucked in some courage and knocked while drumming up an apology for being late. Footsteps sounded on the other side, proving that the apartment had wood floors, judging by the clacks. It sounded like Adora was wearing high heels, which made him look over his outfit. He was still dressed for school, so it wasn’t like he was underdressed, but now he couldn’t get the mental image of Adora in a tight dress out of his head.

The door opened to the possibility that he was at the wrong apartment. The woman before him had red hair instead of white, pale skin instead of tan, and bright green eyes that reminded him a bit too much of Meenka. If the woman had horns, she could have passed herself off as the teiffon’s sister.

“I’m sorry,” he started as his cheeks lit themselves on fire. “I think I’ve got the wrong place.”

“Ooh, somebody is in trouble,” the woman chuckled and leaned against the door to look him over. “Adora didn’t tell you she had a roommate, did she?”

“Maybe I just forgot?” he offered with a nervous smile as far too many porn scenarios came to mind.

“Milly,” Adora called from within the apartment, “quit teasing him and open the door.”

“Well, I was going to make you guess my name,” the roommate sighed before looking him over again, “but now the fun is gone. Come on in.”

The place was definitely out of her pay grade. Not only did they have wood floors, but the beige furniture looked like somebody had professionally cleaned it recently, and the kitchen to his right was more spacious than Eva’s. Adora must have prepped the game right after she got home, because she was still in the same outfit she wore at school.

“I was starting to think that I got all of this out for nothing,” she teased as he walked over to the coffee table to put down his stuff. “Milly was going to mop the floor with me until you showed up and saved me.”

“I told you, I have a date,” Milly groaned and grabbed a purse hanging by the door. “So, don’t wait up for me. You two kids have fun now, but play nice, Adora. He looks a little green.”

“Kids? Please. You’re a year older than me.”

Liam wouldn’t have guessed that Adora was the oldest of the two, not when Milly still held some youthful chubbiness to her face. He remembered to wave goodbye though, then turned in time to see Adora splitting her massive deck of cards into two equal halves.
